Hats are everywhere in the movies, and Alan Arkin wears a nice fedora in the boxing comedy "Grudge Match." Learn all about it when you click to read this story.

“Grudge Match” is fighting for a place at the top of the list of comedy films released this holiday season.

In the movie "Grudge Match," Alan Arkin's character wears a fedora similar to this Dobbs Jet.

The story centers around two retired boxers who are 30 years past retirement and looking for the rematch they never had in their youth. In a movie context, it is geriatric “Rocky” vs. “Raging Bull,” with Sylvester Stallone and Robert de Niro playing the leads.

Luckily, neither takes their role too seriously and they put on a good show about aging, boxing, enemies and aging.

Stallone’s trainer is played by Alan Arkin, who wears a fedora through much of the movie. It is a brown dress hat with a shorter brim and a wide hat band. Click this sentence to see a link of Arkin in his hat.

At Hats Plus, we have two hats that make for great matches, if you want a hat of your own that looks like Arkin’s.

One of your best options is the Dobbs Jet in the color mink. It is a rich dark brown, features a short snap brim that can be worn up as Arkin wears it, and the Dobbs Jet also comes with a wide dress band.

Also available is a nice quality but less expensive Dynafelt Pinch in the color “wood” or brown. Whereas the Dobbs Jet was made from fur felt, the Pinch fedora is made from a blend of wool. However, it shares many of the same features of Arkin’s hat. It has a short brim, wide hat band and brim that can be worn up or down.

Got another hat you want us to identify in the movies? Write to us and let us know.

"Gangster Squad" is loaded with mobsters, cops, guns, girls and hats. Wanna find out what hats they are wearing? We match the actors to their hats when you click this link.

Opening this weekend is the pulse-pounding crime thriller “Gangster Squad.” In it a group of hard-nosed L.A. cops go deep undercover to take out the local mob boss Mickey Cohen, played by Sean Penn. That group is led by the actors Josh Brolin and Ryan Gosling. And while the movie plays fast and loose with the real events, there is no denying the action or a slinky Emma Stone as the romantic lead.

Lushly set in 1949, the number one thing you can count on is the phenomenal wardrobe loaded with hats. If you especially like teardrop crowns for your fedoras, this movie will really trip your trigger.

Brolin leads the way for the good guys, and he’s as square jawed as Dick Tracy in the comic books. His hat of choice, however, is not banana yellow. His is a classic teardrop crown design where the crown is highest at the pinch and swoops down in the back as the teardrop rounds out. The Biltmore Ark hats that we carry are the same cut, if not color of Brolin’s topper. If you want the color and don’t mind a more general teardrop crown design, Biltmore’s Eleganza in “butterscotch” is a close match.

The police detective played by Ryan Gosling seems to have a new hat for every suit he wears in the film. Yet, the hat he probably wears most is a grey Stetson Downs. It has a narrower hat band and a teardrop crown.

Critics agree that Sean Penn as the villainous mob boss Mickey Cohen is truly sinister. His hat of choice in the film is a grey one with a center dent crown. The brim is worn up, which was done more frequently in the 1940s than it seems to be done today. Our best contender for that hat is the Stetson Temple, with its center dent crown and snap brim.

Breaking with the more formal wear hat designs is the character played by Robert Patrick. His hat is still a fedora, but it borrows a touch from the western tradition. Far from a cowboy hat, its skinny leather hat band and overall design plays a little more ruggedly and rural. A match for his hat is the Stetson Roadster. The Roadster’s snap brim might be a little smaller, but the walnut colored fur felt, skinny leather hat band and overall design is a pretty close match.

If there are other hats you want to match from the movies or TV, always feel free to write to us and ask.

In the meantime, see you at the movies.

Want to look as hot as Jude Law in a hat, like he did in "Sherlock Holmes: A Game of Shadows"? Read more to find out what he wore.

Jude Law doesn’t need any help as a sex symbol in Hollywood, but the dapper brown bowler (also known as a derby) he sports in “Sherlock Holmes: A Game of Shadows” seems to give him yet another unfair advantage.

This Beaver Brand bowler looks very much like the one worn by Jude Law in "Sherlock Holmes: A Game of Shadows."

Law’s Dr. Watson is hardly alone in this regard. This Victorian era-set action-adventure film is actually rife with men wearing bowlers, which would have been true to the dress of the time. You will find a number of top hats, too.

As a good hat movie, “A Game of Shadows” exceeds expectations.

Whether it stands on its own all depends on whether you prefer cerebral Basil Rathbone-style Sherlocks or director Guy Ritchie’s Robert Downey jr. creation of a boozing, brawling, unwashed crime fighter.

Regardless, if you liked the hats in this movie, you’ll love the full-color selection of bowlers at Hats Plus.
One of the greatest baseball movies of all time is "The Natural." It also is a great movie for hat lovers. Nearly everybody wears a hat. Learn all about what they're wearing in this edition of Hollywood Hatties.

Need a little spring training of your own to get psyched up for the baseball season? Gather some friends, put a 6-pack on ice, buy some peanuts and pop in 1984’s “The Natural,” starring Robert Redford, Glenn Close, Robert Duvall and Kim Basinger.

If you’ve never seen it, it has everything a great baseball movie should. An unlikely hero looking for redemption, country folk adapting to city life, big money and corruption vs. honor and integrity, lust vs. love. Oh, and hats. Really well represented hats.

The Biltmore Ark is a teardrop crown fedora similar to one worn by Robert Redford in 'The Natural.'

The core of the story is about Roy Hobbs (Redford)—a rookie in his mid-30s looking for one last chance to break into the game. In his youth he was truly great until a mysterious and sexy assailant shot him and nearly destroyed his life. Now he’s back and playing for the worst team in baseball run by an honest manager/team co-owner and a greedy corrupt co-owner. Vying for his heart are a long lost true love (Close) and a smokin’ hot gold digger (Basinger) owned by the corrupt powers within the movie. The fate of the player, the team and the lovers boils down to one tense climatic playoff game.

Robert Duvall wears a Big Apple cap in grey tweed similar to this one in the 1984 hit "The Natural."

Aside from some early scenes set in the early to mid-1920s, the bulk of the film takes place in 1939. The two biggest hat wearers of the movie are Robert Redford and Robert Duvall, who plays a conniving sports writer named Max Mercy. In the ’20s, Duvall wears a large grey tweed Big Apple cap. In the ’30s he’s wearing several impeccable teardrop crown fedoras in primarily pearl grey and graphite grey. These are similar to our Selentino Sterling in silver and Stetson Downs in graphite.

Redford’s character is a Depression-era man who has spent his time living on the fringes of poverty. His brown fedora is dirty and well worn. The teardrop crown is broken-in and a little out of shape. The hat band is stained, presumably from sweat. As his baseball career improves, so does his hat. Careful observers will notice the nicer hat switching between a center-dent crown and a broken-in teardrop crown. No matter what hat he is wearing, the snap brim is usually down in the front and back. Similar hats at Hats Plus are the Churchill Capone and Biltmore Ark.

Redford’s worn-in hat is indicative of the great work done by the costume designer of the film. Most of the characters and extras have generally worn-in hats in various states of repair and disrepair, which is far more accurate than movies where everyone is wearing a shiny new hat. Most of the fur felt fedoras in this film are teardrop crowns, but some are center dent. You’ll also find extras wearing a lot of Panama hats and boaters or skimmers. It is summer in the film, after all.

My favorite bit player in the film is the team psychiatrist who continuously compares losing to diseases in an effort to motivate the team: “Losing is like a disease, worse than bubonic plague.” In fact, every time I’m force to listen to a motivational speaker, I usually snicker that line to whoever is seated next to me. I digress. This character in the film wears a straw optimo, in case you’re curious.

And there you have it. Now you’re all set for another season of baseball and stunning hats to wear to the game. What’s left?

Batter up! Or should that be hatter up?

"The Adjustment Bureau" has yet to be released, but it is already looking like a great hat movie. Check out what the stars Matt Damon and Terence Stamp are wearing when you click here.

Getting ahead of the game, it is time to preview a hat movie, “The Adjustment Bureau.”

Judging solely by the trailers, Matt Damon’s latest romantic thriller will be loaded with great men’s hats.

The premise of the film seems to be that a promising young politician (Damon) is fated to live his life a certain way. When he meets a beautiful dancer played by Emily Blunt, he breaks with the fate that is scripted for him. Enter a sinister “big brother” agency, led by Terence Stamp, that wants to set fate back on track, forcing Damon and Blunt to run for their lives—or at least their love.

Expected to be the first big blockbuster of the year, “The Adjustment Bureau” releases March 4.

Matt’s character is seen running all over the trailer wearing what appears to be a fresh, straw stingy brim fedora with a center dent crown and a brightly colored band. Fans might want to check out our Milan Pinch Straw Hat in the color “metal” for a similar look.

The apparent villains kick it old school with more traditional fedoras. Stamp wears a broader brimmed fedora similar to a Guerra Classico.
It is time we talk about cowboy hats in Hollywood, and what better way to start out than with the exciting remake of "True Grit."

The color and C-crown design of this cowboy hat called the "Duke" by Beaver Brand looks similar to the hat Jeff Bridges wears in "True Grit."

Saddle up, Pilgrims. It is about time we tackle some Western wear on the Hollywood Hatties.

The movie everyone is talking about these days is the remake of “True Grit,” and yet no one is focused on the hats. The revenge, wit, actors, crisp writing and a dynamite performance by a 14-year-old girl…alas no hat talk. What is a cowboy movie with hatless cowboys and girls?

If you’ve somehow missed it, “True Grit” is the story of a girl named Mattie Ross (Hailee Steinfeld) and her quest for vengeance against her father’s murderer in the post-Civil War Old West. Self assured and nobody’s fool, Mattie hires U.S. Marshal Rooster Cogburn (Jeff Bridges) to track her father’s killer with her in tow, making sure to see her revenge taken first hand. They’re joined by a Texas Ranger (Matt Damon) who is searching for the same man. The term “true grit” reflects the toughness necessary to successfully see out their mission.

It is a gritty Western loaded with sharp wit and some good action. Very different in tone and pacing from the original with John Wayne in 1969, which was very good for different reasons.

On the hat side of things, there’s no denying the greasy, bullet-eaten hat of Bridge’s Cogburn. Talk about grit. That hat has seen it all. All the hats in this film were custom jobs, at least as far their personality goes. However, if you want to try to emulate Jeff’s hat, start with the Beaver Brand Duke.

The Duke has a higher-profile C-crown like Jeff’s hat. It comes in a similar color, too. Best of all, it has a wire in the brim that you can shape in any way you like. Jeff’s hat had a flatter brim, but you can reshape the Duke to the style of your inner cowboy.

What type of fedoras are they wearing in "Shutter Island"? Find out all about Leonardo DiCaprio and Mark Ruffalo's trend-setting headwear when you click right here.

When a murderess has escaped from an asylum on an island, you wouldn’t think there would be many places for her to go. However, U.S. Marshal Teddy Daniels (Leonardo DiCaprio) and his partner Chuck Aule (Mark Ruffalo) are sent to find her. But when their investigation begins to turn up evidence of problems at the asylum, their very sanity is called into question in this thriller from the summer of 2010.

Set in 1954, DiCaprio and Ruffalo take on the classic detective look of the era. Short ties, raincoats and fedoras. The look works great for them, especially DiCaprio, who doesn’t have your typically dashing Hollywood mug. Yet for both men, the dress hats help frame their faces well.

Leonardo DiCaprio wears a grey fedora similar to this Biltmore Stewart fur felt dress hat in the movie "Shutter Island." The feather is optional, and you can pluck yours to look more like Leo.

DiCaprio and Ruffalo appear to wear different colors of the same model hat. The fur felt fedoras have a C-crown, or teardrop-shaped crown, that is wrapped with a medium to wide bow band–no feather. Naturally, each government man wears his snap brim in the down position.

The fedora worn by DiCaprio looks like a Biltmore Stewart in steel or a Stetson Downs in caribou with a dark band. Ruffalo’s hat is harder to place. Although it is the same shape as the hats just named, we don’t carry those models in the tan/tawny felt with a dark brown band. We DO have have center-dent crown fedoras with similar coloring. The Selentino Sterling in light camel and the Stetson Temple in tawny will work nicely. If you want a fancier silk finish to the hat, the Stetson Firenze in tawny also is great.

No matter what you choose, you’ll be sure to cause a sensation. At the bar, at the office, at the party…just stay away from the asylum.

If it isn't the most famous hat in movie history, it is certainly the deadliest. What hit man needs a pistol, when he has a steel-brim bowler? This week Hollywood Hatties explores "Goldfinger" and the butler named Oddjob who is always dressed to kill.

Hats off to the henchman who made homicide a fashion accessory.

Fans of James Bond movies know exactly what I mean, but if you’re new to 1964′s spy thriller “Goldfinger,” let me catch you up to speed.

“Goldfinger” is the third James Bond movie in the still-active franchise, and it is easily the best. Sean Connery stars as the heroic Agent 007. After detonating a Cuban heroine operation, he is assigned to investigate a gold smuggler named Auric Goldfinger, played by German actor Gert Frobe. Goldfinger is only mildly bad until we learn he plans to set off an “atomic device” in Fort Knox–irradiating the U.S. gold supply and jacking up the value of his gold stock piles.

Getting to Goldfinger would be easy, if it wasn’t for his silent Korean butler named Oddjob (Harold Sakata). Oddjob is built like a truck and a master of judo. He also has a secret weapon: a bowler. Of course, as this is the Bond flick with the most clever gadgets introduced in one movie, Oddjob’s bowler is no ordinary men’s hat.

The hat of this gentleman’s gentleman has a steel brim. When flung across the screen he can sever the head from a marble statue or snap the neck of a beautiful blonde. Why no one thinks to duck when this deadly bowler is thrown at them from 20 yards away is immaterial. It is one bad bowler in the hands of a master.

Sadly, Hats Plus does not carry any steel-brimmed assassin’s bowlers. However, we do carry many stately bowlers.

As the characters in Bond movies are always dressed in the most refined fashions, we suggest a bowler by Christys’. Like Bond, Christys’ is based in London. It also is considered the maker of premium men’s hats. Christys’ bowler is made from genuine fur felt that makes it soft and smooth. The up-turned pre-formed brim has a distinguished grosgrain-bound edge that matches the hat band. Inside it is satin lined with a soft leather sweatband.

Be the cutting-edge of high fashion with this bowler, even if it can’t cut through any statuary.

As we’re a proud Chicago company, it only seems right to tackle the ultimate G-man movie set in our fair city: “The Untouchables.”

This 1987 tour de force directed by Brian dePalma stars Kevin Costner as Treasury agent Eliot Ness taking on Prohibition-era crime boss Al Capone (Robert DeNiro). As if the bootleggers have a chance when Ness is backed by incorruptible lawmen played by Sean Connery, Andy Garcia and Charles Martin Smith?

Kevin Costner plays Eliot Ness in the movie "The Untouchables" while wearing a hat similar to this Stetson Downs.

Forget that this is an incredible crime drama that features the best gunfight ever filmed. (Need I remind you of Costner chasing a baby buggy down the stairs at Union Station as he battles nearly a dozen of Capone’s men?) This film is the ultimate showcase of men’s hats.

Virtually all of the actors with speaking roles have hats, and at least 75% of the male extras have hats, too. Best of all, the wardrobe department didn’t just buy 200 Stetson Temples of different colors and call it good. Dozens of hat styles are represented.

None of the prominent hats are doubled up. Kevin Costner wears a grey Stetson Downs cocked back high on his head for most of the movie. The teardrop-shaped crown is distinctive. He also wears the hat several ways. During the scenes where he is in the city the snap brim in down in front and up in the back. In the scenes at the Canadian border he wears the same hat with the brim down in the front and back.

Andy Garcia’s hat looks similar, but in our shop the closest we have to it is the Biltmore Ark. His is pecan, and he’s a strictly front brim down and back brim up type of cat.

In old cowboy movies the good guys always wore white hats and the bad guys wore black. Oddly enough in “The Untouchables,” most of the good guys wore teardrop-crown hats and the mobsters wore center-creased fedoras. DeNiro’s Capone wore a cream-colored fedora with a black band. It has a narrow center crease with a pinch that almost runs the length of the crown. Its wide snap brim sports a lift on the right side and a downturn on left side. A great hat that resembles it in our shop is the straw Stetson Portofino. It would need a replacement band in black, but that will be the closest hat we have in shape.

Sean Connery’s hat is the only prominently featured non-fedora that isn’t a hat that goes with a uniform. His appears to be an eight-panel cap made of brown wool similar to our brown 8-panel Cavanaugh Donegal. It is a hat that invokes blue-collar Irish immigrants of that era, which Connery’s character is one—despite his Scotch brogue. It is also a hat design that has seen a great resurgence in popularity in that past few years.

Charles Martin Smith’s character is that of a mild-mannered Treasury Dept. accountant turned shotgun wielding lawman—a slightly more intelligent Elmer Fudd, if you will. His hat of choice appears to be a Churchill Jimmy, distinguished by a teardrop crown, grosgrain dress band and smaller snap brim.

But really, watch the movie, and you’ll see myriad hats including bowlers, boaters and fedoras of every distinguishable difference. Grosgrain bow bands, bowless silk bands, countless center dent variations, colors and brim widths. Got a question about one? Get a screen shot of it, and we’ll help you find it in our vast selection.
