This isn’t as silly a question as it might sound. We get a lot of customers asking us this very question every autumn.

With 600 different models of hats and caps from which to choose and a budget that will limit most people to only one selection, it isn’t necessarily an easy question to answer.

The first question you should ask yourself is what does this hat need to accomplish? Do you want it for warmth? Do you want it for fashion? If you are an outdoor baggage handler at O’Hare Airport, you are likely going to want the warmest thing we carry, which would be a fur (or faux fur) lined leather bomber with big ear flaps that cover your ears, cheeks and jaw. If you are looking to be the template for fashion in high school, you will want a cotton, stingy-brim fedora by Goorin Brothers. You aren’t going to be accepted at the opera in your bomber, and you are going to freeze to death in that tiny, thin fedora. So maybe you want something in the middle.

Another decision boils down to hats and caps. If you are looking for something more professional, a fur felt fedora or godfather is a stylish and warm option. Maybe you want something less austenatcious. A woolen ivy cap or newsboy cap will be warm and remain an easy cap to wear while driving. Some caps are insulated or come in thicker cashmere shells. Other caps offer earflaps, for those who spend a lot of time outside and still want to look fashionable.

One of the greatest challenges for fans of hats and caps is finding one they like that still works with their winter coat. A common mistake many people make is trying too hard to match their hat and coat. Maybe one in a hundred people finds a perfect color match or one that is close enough that no one else will notice the difference at 5 feet away. If you have a brown wool jacket and find a cashmere cap you like that is also brown, just by virtue of their different fabrics they might never match.

We cannot more strongly recommend finding a hat or cap of a completely different color that compliments your coat. Sometimes the right feather in that hatband serves to strengthen the bond between the hat and coat. If your coat is dark, avoid a dark hat. The navy blue peacoat in the photo looks great with the Biltmore Reese Eleganza fedora in cognac. A black or navy blue dress hat will look stunning perched over a grey top coat. Our collection of plaid and patch caps helps to alliviate this problem by mixing and matching so many combinations that can be used with many different styles of coats. The right plaid or patch cap might work great with your fall leather jacket and your heavy winter coat.

If you’ve never seen it, it has everything a great baseball movie should. An unlikely hero looking for redemption, country folk adapting to city life, big money and corruption vs. honor and integrity, lust vs. love. Oh, and hats. Really well represented hats.

The core of the story is about Roy Hobbs (Redford)—a rookie in his mid-30s looking for one last chance to break into the game. In his youth he was truly great until a mysterious and sexy assailant shot him and nearly destroyed his life. Now he’s back and playing for the worst team in baseball run by an honest manager/team co-owner and a greedy corrupt co-owner. Vying for his heart are a long lost true love (Close) and a smokin’ hot gold digger (Basinger) owned by the corrupt powers within the movie. The fate of the player, the team and the lovers boils down to one tense climatic playoff game.

Aside from some early scenes set in the early to mid-1920s, the bulk of the film takes place in 1939. The two biggest hat wearers of the movie are Robert Redford and Robert Duvall, who plays a conniving sports writer named Max Mercy. In the ’20s, Duvall wears a large grey tweed Big Apple cap. In the ’30s he’s wearing several impeccable teardrop crown fedoras in primarily pearl grey and graphite grey. These are similar to our Selentino Sterling in silver and Stetson Downs in graphite.

Redford’s character is a Depression-era man who has spent his time living on the fringes of poverty. His brown fedora is dirty and well worn. The teardrop crown is broken-in and a little out of shape. The hat band is stained, presumably from sweat. As his baseball career improves, so does his hat. Careful observers will notice the nicer hat switching between a center-dent crown and a broken-in teardrop crown. No matter what hat he is wearing, the snap brim is usually down in the front and back. Similar hats at Hats Plus are the Churchill Capone and Biltmore Ark.

Redford’s worn-in hat is indicative of the great work done by the costume designer of the film. Most of the characters and extras have generally worn-in hats in various states of repair and disrepair, which is far more accurate than movies where everyone is wearing a shiny new hat. Most of the fur felt fedoras in this film are teardrop crowns, but some are center dent. You’ll also find extras wearing a lot of Panama hats and boaters or skimmers. It is summer in the film, after all.

My favorite bit player in the film is the team psychiatrist who continuously compares losing to diseases in an effort to motivate the team: “Losing is like a disease, worse than bubonic plague.” In fact, every time I’m force to listen to a motivational speaker, I usually snicker that line to whoever is seated next to me. I digress. This character in the film wears a straw optimo, in case you’re curious.

And there you have it. Now you’re all set for another season of baseball and stunning hats to wear to the game. What’s left?

Part of the Gruppo Doria line, both the 8/4 newsboy cap and the duckbill cap are made from the softest leather we’ve ever felt on a hat. The leather is rich, supple and extremely lightweight. Each cap is satin lined and complete with a soft cloth sweat band. These caps also come in fitted sizes to maximize your comfort. The 8/4 is a rounder design that measures 11 1/2 inches across its widest point. The duckbill has a bit of an 8-panel look, but it tappers more to a point at the front of the cap. It measures 10 1/4 inches across its widest point.

The Doria duckbill cap also comes in a sensually soft nylon that is gold with a dark blue and red houndstooth design. This Borsalino cap also is satin lined with a cloth sweatband. It is 10 inches across at its widest point.

It is not as easy as it might sound.

A hat can speak volumes about you, and it is most important to find the styles that speak to you. We might recommend a wider brim for people with larger noggins and shorter brimmed hats for folks with less pronounced craniums, but none of that advice means anything if you envision yourself in specific style. We aren’t going to push a cowboy hat on a hipster or a top hat on a paperboy.

Hat sizes aren’t measured in traditional inches. Clearly, a size 7 ¼ hat doesn’t mean the circumference of your head is 7 ¼ inches.

To figure out your hat size, get a tape measure. As a hat should rest about a finger’s width above your ear, wrap the tape measure evenly around your head at that level. (Use a mirror to make sure you take an even measurement.) Then check out our handy-dandy hat-size converter below. See what your measurement in inches becomes in hat sizes.

A nicely fitted hat should rest gently above your brow, neither pinching or squeezing your head nor sliding down to your ears.

If you already know that your head is particularly oblong or round, our friendly staff can gently adjust your new hat to better fit you.

Just remember, measuring isn’t an exact science. Like shoes, not every brand measures exactly the same fit. However, following these guidelines should get you pretty close. The best way to get a true fit is to try on your new hat.

Use a tape measure to learn the size of your head and use that measurement to find your proper hat size.
